   Forest Time

Plaster

Forest time tells the story of my time spent in the woods over the course of a year. The four seasons are represented, as are some of the flora, fauna and fungi. Plaster casting directly from the natural environment is a very immediate and rewarding experience.

Prometheus and Pandora
Box elder, white ash, sugar maple, bee’s wax.
Based on their respective mythologies. Prometheus stole fire from the Gods so man could “progress”. We are still burning fires obsessively. Nowadays they are hidden from sight in combustion engines and power plants.
Pandora was warned not to open the box or terror would take flight, she did but closed it before hope could escape.

Ground of Mind

Plaster

I believe our view of the more than human world needs to change. Ground of Mind is an attempt to warp out dated anthropomorphic perspectives.  The central column of the piece is cast directly from the ground and reoriented in the studio. This was a collaboration with the deer. I gave them maize, they gave me hoof prints.

Matriarch

White ash tree, wild clay, straw, sand.

Mature trees can recognize their kin and will transfer nutrients underground through their roots and the mycorrhizal network.

In many cultures large mature trees are seen as an ‘axis mundi’, connecting the terrestrial world, the spiritual realm and the cosmos.

Amergin's Journey

Plaster, clay, found natural materials.

Based on the myth of Amergin, the first person to set foot on the island of Ireland. As a druid he had the power to name all the elements of nature, both physical and spiritual, into existence. His song was a declaration of the unity of all things.

Unearthed

Tree roots, wild clay, natural pigment, limewash, plaster.

Sámi mythology tells of spirits of The Underworld. You and I stand sole to sole with these spirits in a perfect mirrored image.

Rewild

Wild clay, straw

Based on the artist Katie Holten’s tree alphabet, which in turn was based on Ogham (the ancient Irish alphabet). Both phonetic systems use a specific tree species in place of a letter.

An acorn planting ritual or ceremony.

Gilded Nest

Elm tree, gold leaf, grow light, 18 native seedlings

I spend a lot of time in the woods fencing native seedlings before they’re eaten by our excessively large deer population. In this magic mini forest they are cradled and honored by a golden tree.

Deer Dreams

Holly tree, limestone, deer hair and teeth.

A nest made from deer hair collected from deer beds using tweezers over the course of one year.

A Messenger

Video and foraged objects.

I had a very close encounter with Fred the barred owl. She allowed me to touch her feathers while she was perched on the low branch of a tree. It was a sublime experience. I have attempted to create a similarly intimate experience for the viewer when they look through two eye holes in the wall. In Fred's microcosm you will see bones, feathers, seeds, snake skin, etc.
